The phrase "Good for you" has always seemed a bit rude and dismissive to me.
However, without offering specifics like those listed above or even further detail like "My father applied for that job and did not get it.", it is easy to imply that the only reason for the statement "good for you" is to shed a negative or apathetic light on the situation. It may be, but it can also be seen as a statement about things as they are. For example, if you say "I got a job at ABC company today", response "Good for you" simply means that for you it is good that you got a job, but for all the other potential candidates who didn't get employed it certainly cannot be good. As if the person wanted to say "for me it wouldn't be so good, but since it's about you, good for you"!The phrase "Good for you" has always seemed a bit rude and dismissive to me.
