Yeah, but did it have to be so LONG? In my day, we assumed you'd have to be on acid to really enjoy it. And I LIKE Kubrick, usually. Anyway, there's nobody up there looking out for us puny humans, not aliens, not Jesus. We're all alone; BRRR, it's cold out there! This is the greatest science fiction film ever made. It depicts our encounter with a far superior form of Type 3 Civilization which ignites and patiently observes our evolution. This movie is not about fancy futuristic sci-fi gadgets or green big headed aliens - it is about the deepest philosophical questions of our existence, our purpose, and the direction we are going: conception, birth and death, search for God, Artificial Intelligence, evolution to superhuman status, life and energy, etc. [1][2]2001: A Space Odyssey
