Is journalism facing a crisis of trust?
I agree with your sentiment that media extremes are dangerous. Examples of states failing due to polarization in the media can be seen all over the world (Yugoslavia comes to mind). It may be possible to return it to health if one of two things happen. 1. If the populace as a whole, or a majority come together to speak out against polarized journalism. or 2. if a competing company (likely a startup) can prove that there are other ways of making money in journalism, and can prove to the public that it is trust worthy. "How can journalism be improved?"
Thats a tough nut to crack. Journalism and the companies responsible for them would probably be better off if they recognized where they had driven this country, and works as a whole and cohesive unit to fix that. This is unlikely to happen of course, since the people who are working at these companies ahve become radicalized with their own information. How can you bridge that gap? "Who is responsible for this?"
Probably all of us as a collective society, who allowed ourselves and failed to discourage each other from avoiding bias in media. However, we can also trace problem back to ways in which our media makes money. Once upon a time, it was that our media had no need to propagate political journalism in order to make money, they werent reliant on being able to achieve good ratings. Once the majority of journalism "sells out" to one political side or the other how could anyone possibly think it would ever return to health? Whether you agree with the side adopted by the media or not you should be very concerned about what this means. Extremes on either side can lead to fascism when the side chosen is the predominant thinking in government. In-other-words when the media aligns with government then lookout! There seems to be a bias in every single news outlet. Even worse, quite often reporters distort the facts, and plain simply lie to us. Who is responsible for this? How can journalism be improved?
